Peer Recovery Support

Delivered by Certified Peer Recovery Supporters who have navigated their own journeys through addiction and recovery, and who walk alongside others as they find their own path.

Peer Recovery Support is the heart of what makes The Garage different. This service is delivered by Certified Peer Recovery Supporters (CPRS) individuals who have navigated their own journeys through addiction and recovery, and who have been trained and certified to walk alongside others as they find their own path. The relationship between a peer supporter and a client is unlike any other in the behavioral health system: it is built on radical empathy, shared understanding, and the unspoken power of knowing that someone else has truly been where you are.

Peer supporters at The Garage are not clinicians and that is precisely what makes them so effective. They offer something that no credentialed professional can replicate: the lived, authentic experience of overcoming addiction. They help clients navigate the uncertainty of early recovery, connect with community resources, build hope, and stay engaged with their wellness goals. They show not just tell that recovery is possible, sustainable, and worth pursuing.

Certified Peer Recovery Supporters at The Garage work in one-on-one and small group settings, providing regular contact, motivational support, and practical assistance. They collaborate closely with the clinical and case management team to ensure that peer support is integrated into not separate from each client's overall care plan. All peer supporters are certified under Ohio's CPRS credentialing framework and operate within defined professional and ethical boundaries.

Who this service is for

Peer Recovery Support is available to any individual in any stage of the recovery process from those considering taking the first step, to those in early recovery who need consistent encouragement, to those maintaining long-term wellness who benefit from ongoing connection. It is particularly effective for individuals who feel disconnected from traditional clinical services, who have experienced stigma in healthcare settings, or who simply need to see that someone like them has made it.

Why peer support is uniquely powerful

Bridges the trust gap: Many people in recovery distrust clinical systems a peer supporter who has "been there" opens doors that clinicians cannot.

Reduces stigma in real time: The very presence of a certified peer supporter challenges the stigma around addiction by modeling recovery with dignity.

Increases engagement: Research consistently shows that peer support improves retention in treatment and reduces relapse rates.

Provides hope when hope is hardest to find: In moments of doubt, a peer supporter's own story of recovery is the most compelling evidence that change is possible.

Fills the gaps between appointments: Peer supporters provide continuity and connection between clinical sessions, reducing the vulnerability of the "in-between" periods.
